Alto's
EZ Mat, Inc. manufactures and sells mat cutting tools for the art materials
industry and is headquartered in Ellensburg, Washington. Alto Albright designed
and patented the mat cutting system in the early 1970's. Mats are primarily used
to enhance art work displayed in frames. The mat cutting tools are designed to
cut mats, inlays, complex corners, and mosaic
corners. Alto owned and operated Alto's until 1989 when he sold it to his son
Sam Albright. Sam joined the business in 1982 and purchased it from his father
in 1989.
The
company offers two mat cutting system models, replacement blades for all of
their products and instruction books and videos. In the late 1990’s, Sam & Alto
designed and patented the “QuiltCut” a professional fabric cutting system. This
fabric cutting system is designed for stores and serious quilters to save time
and labor in all production cutting. Alto's estimates there are over 15 million
quilters in the United States and this is a growing segment of their business.
Parts
for all products are purchased from various vendors. The products are assembled
and shipped from the Ellensburg facility. Products are sold via a network of
representatives that demonstrate and sell the products at art shows and quilting
shows. These representatives purchase the product from Alto's at wholesale and
sell them at the various shows.
The rural loan ECDA provided to Alto’s EZ Mat, Inc enabled the company to refinance high interest rate debt and take advantage of the low market interest rates. By partnering with US Bank, ECDA was able to provide the gap financing needed to complete this project! The security property is a 7,260 square foot commercial building on an approximate one-half acre lot located in the industrial area of Ellensburg.
